Screen printing is the process of pressing ink through a stenciled mesh screen to create a printed design. It’s a popular technique used in a whole range of different industries, so even if you’ve never heard of the term before today, it’s likely that you’ve worn or used a screen-printed product at some point without even realizing. The process is sometimes called serigraphy or silk screen printing, but all of these names refer to the same basic method.

Screen Printing Process:

Step 1

Design

The design is created in vector form, artwork is separated by each color and then printed onto a transparent sheet.

Step 2

Prepare Screen

A mesh screen is selected depending on the design and then coated with a layer of light-reactive emulsion.

Step 3

Expose Emulsion

Design is laid onto the emulsion-coated screen, and the whole thing is exposed to a very bright light. Each color of the design is placed onto it’s own screen.

Step 4

Wash off Emulsion

Any unhardened emulsion is then carefully rinsed away. This leaves a clear imprint of the design on the screen for the ink to pass through.

Step 5

Set Up & Apply Ink

Garment is placed on printing press onto a flat board . Ink is added to the top end of the screen, and a squeegee is used to pull the ink along the full length of the screen.

Step 6

Cure Ink

The printed product then passes through a dryer, which ‘cures’ the ink and creates a smooth, colourfast finish. Garment is ready to be packed up!
